Updated COVID-19 child vaccination eligibility

July 12, 2022

With recent changes to the COVID-19 vaccine eligibility, it can be hard to track who can get vaccinated and when. Promoting vaccination is essential to keep individuals and communities healthy and is the best way to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The new COVID-19 vaccine eligibility is aimed toward younger children, who are often at a higher risk for a COVID-19 infection as they have not been exposed to other infectious agents, such as influenza or the common cold, and therefore need the immunization to protect themselves. As of June 18, 2022, the CDC has updated its recommendations for children, allowing children ages six months and older to be eligible for vaccination. The new recommendations are as follows:

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine:

  • A two-dose series is recommended for children ages six months to 5 years old.
  • A third dose is available for children in this age group with moderate to severe immunocompromise 28 days after the second dose.

Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine:

  • A three-dose series is recommended for children ages six months to 4 years old.
