Alarming Alzheimer's Disease Prevalence in Yuma County, Arizona

Aug. 22, 2023

A recent study has revealed concerning figures about Alzheimer's disease prevalence among Arizonans over 65, with Yuma County having the highest rate in the state. Coconino County, on the other hand, has the lowest rate. These statistics were unveiled during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Amsterdam, where researchers from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago presented their data analysis. This research focuses on narrowing down Alzheimer's prevalence to specific counties, which offers a clearer view of areas requiring more extensive services for dementia patients, including home health aides, neurologists, and geriatricians.

In Yuma County, approximately 13.3% of adults over 65 are affected by Alzheimer's, closely followed by Santa Cruz and Greenlee counties, where 13.2% of older residents face this challenge. The findings underscore the critical need for enhanced medical services and resources in these areas. For instance, in Maricopa County, Arizona's most populous county, about 11.1% of adults aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's. The study is pivotal in shaping the strategic statewide Alzheimer's and dementia plan, a collaboration between the local Alzheimer's Association and the Arizona Department of Health Services. Previously, estimations were approximate, but this new data-driven precision will significantly impact the allocation of services.

This study also sheds light on demographic disparities, as senior citizens in southern Arizona counties tend to have a higher prevalence of Alzheimer's disease compared to those in the northern counties. Factors such as ethnicity and population density contribute to these differences. The study emphasizes the importance of early intervention and increased support for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers, as the state seeks to manage the growing demands of this progressive and challenging condition.
